About Helle Wijk

Helle Wijk is Professor of Nursing at the Institute of Health and Care 91Ě˝»¨s, Sahlgrenska Academy, University 91Ě˝»¨, and University Hospital Chief Nurse at . She also holds a visiting professorship at the .

Her research focuses on healthcare environments, geriatric care, and person-centred care, with a strong emphasis on how the physical and organisational environment affects health, care quality, and patient safety. She has extensive experience leading interdisciplinary collaborations between healthcare, academia, and architecture.

Professor Wijk has published more than 140 peer-reviewed scientific articles, edited nine books, and authored over 40 book chapters. She has secured substantial external funding as principal investigator and has served as an expert reviewer for national and international research foundations.

As a supervisor, she has guided numerous doctoral students to completion and continues to mentor new generations of researchers in nursing and healthcare sciences. Her teaching excellence has been recognised with the title of , and she actively contributes to educational development and assessment within the Sahlgrenska Academy.

In addition to her academic and clinical roles, Professor Wijk is engaged in national quality registers, research policy, and professional networks, and serves on several boards and advisory groups. She teaches and conducts research on the significance of care environments for patients’ and residents’ health, as well as the environment as both an obstacle and a support in the delivery of care.

She leads the department’s research group on Health Care Environment Research is active in the Centre for Person-Centred Care (GPCC) at the University 91Ě˝»¨, and is Chair of the research network Nursing Research in Collaboration. She is also a board member of Forum for Healthcare Building and a member of the steering groups for the national quality registries Senior Alert and SveDem.

Helle Wijk has advanced training and extensive experience in improvement science and is one of the initiators of the .

Her research is centred on the importance of care environments and on health and social care for older people. Her work explores environmental factors of importance for patients’ and residents’ health, functioning, activity, and wellbeing, as well as their role in shaping staff working practices.

Clinical practiceHelle is University Hospital Senior Nurse, with extensive experience in nursing and clinical improvement work in both hospital and community care. She previously worked as Development Manager in Geriatrics at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. She holds a joint appointment at the Strategic Quality Department (KSA), is an academic member of the management team of Area 6, and represents academia in the hospital’s function group for Research, Development, Education, and Innovation (FoUUI).
