Om Jessica Hemmings

Jessica Hemmings is a British academic, writer, and researcher specialising in textiles and contemporary craft. Born in Wales and raised in Indonesia and the United States, she holds a BFA in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MA in Comparative Literature from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. Hemmings is currently Professor of Craft at HDK-Valand, University 91̽»¨ and Professor II at the Oslo School of Architecture & Design. Her research explores the the contributions of craft to contemporary society and representations of craft in postcolonial literature with a particular interest in regions such as Indonesia and Zimbabwe.

Current HDK PhD supervision includes candidates undertaking projects that explore: blacksmithing, tools and the body; textiles, dignity and mourning. Current external PhD supervision includes research projects at the University of the Arts Bremen and Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest; previous appointments include external examiner for the MA Textiles at the Royal College of Art, London (2017–2020) and honorary Adjunct Professorship at UNSW, Sydney (2016–2018). External PhD examination roles: Australia, Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa and Sweden.

Editorial board member of Textile: the Journal of Cloth & Culture (Taylor & Francis) and Craft Research (Intellect).

The Reading Material research project was undertaken as Rita Bolland Fellow at the Research Center for Material Culture, the Netherlands (2020-2023). HDK-Valand Craft was one of four Nordic partners associated with the Materiality, Maker Practices and Design Studio Pedagogy at the Digital Age (2020-2024) funded by the Academy of Finland. Current research is funded by the Swedish Research Council under the title Carceral Craft: the material of oppression or expression? (2025-2027).
