Entry requirements

Basic eligibility and 15 credits (ECTS) from a bachelor education in music or equivalent.聽Special qualifications in the form of musical knowledge and skills聽are聽assessed at the admission test.

1. Instrumental Studies (Instrumentala studier), 15 hp

Chamber Music (Kammarmusik), 7,5 hp
Grading scale: Pass (G) and Fail (U)

  • ensemble formation and repertoire selection
  • supervised chamber music lessons
  • independent rehearsals in the ensemble

3. Orchestra/Ensemble (Orkester/ensemblespel), 7,5 hp
Grading scale: Pass (G) and Fail (U)

Together with the students of the Master's Programme in Symphonic Orchestral Performance, the orchestral instrument student participates in joint productions as well as in lectures and preparations (section rehearsals, string leader support, intonation, etc.) The student can also be part of the following instrument-specific ensembles depending on the main instrument and the current repertoire. Which ensemble(s) the student is part of is also determined by which ensemble projects are ongoing during the current semester:

  • wind ensemble (applies to woodwind and French horn students in small ensembles and to wind and percussion students in symphonic wind orchestras)
  • brass ensemble (applies to brass and percussion students)
  • chamber orchestra
  • percussion ensemble

Objectives

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able:

Knowledge and understanding

  • In their solo playing demonstrate a basic understanding of the repertoire covered in the course (sub-course 1)
  • demonstrate stylistic and formal understanding in ensemble and/or orchestral playing (sub-course 2 and 3)

Competence and skills

  • express the stylistic features of the repertoire covered in the course (sub-course 1 and 2)
  • work independently towards clearly defined goals formulated jointly by student and teacher (sub-course 1)
  • demonstrate an awareness of their own part in relation to the score (sub-course 2 and 3)

*J*udgement and approach

  • make basic artistic decisions in interaction with others when working with the chosen repertoire (sub-course 2)

Form of teaching

The course is conducted through individual teaching and teaching in small and/or large groups. Concerts and stage performances are included in the course.

Language of instruction: Swedish or English

Examination formats

The student is examined at the end of the course based on the course鈥檚 learning outcomes. The basis for the examination is an overall assessment of the student's creative and oral presentations. The number of examination sessions is limited to five.

If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).

If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University 91探花 with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course鈥檚 intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.

If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.

If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University 91探花.

Grades

The grading scale comprises: Pass (G) and Fail (U).

Course evaluation

The students evaluate the course in writing and anonymously at the end of the course聽with the help of the course leader and/or the teachers. The result of the evaluations will聽form the basis for the design of the forthcoming course. The result of the course聽evaluation and any changes to the structure of the course should be communicated both聽to the students who carried out the evaluation and to the students who are to start the聽course.
