About Shruti Taneja Johansson

Shruti Taneja Johansson is associate professor (docent) in education at the Department of Education and Special Education. She holds a PhD in education and degrees in psychology and the interdisciplinary field of child and childhood studies. Before joining the university, she worked extensively with children and young people with developmental disabilities in England, Sweden and India, gaining experience from special schools, mainstream schools, residential schools, respite care and residential homes.

Shruti is the scientific leader and chair of the advisory board for the Special Educator and Special Teacher programmes. She also serves on the advisory board for the Master’s in Education programme.

Research interests: Shruti’s research centres on disability, education and inclusion, spanning the Swedish context as well as broader international perspectives. She examines how mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion operate across different educational settings, and how disability intersects with other forms of disadvantage to shape educational and life trajectories.

A key strand of her work investigates the everyday practices of inclusive education. In recent years, she has focused on how teaching, care and participation are enacted for students with intellectual disabilities, and how teachers, assistants and interdisciplinary teams negotiate tensions between policy ambitions, pedagogical realities and diverse learner needs. Her research also explores perspectives and practices related to inclusive education more broadly, as well as cultural dimensions of autism and ADHD and their implications for learning and participation.

Current research projects:

Teaching interests: Shruti teaches primarily within the field of special and inclusive education, both in the Special Educator and Special Teacher programmes and in independent courses. She also has expertise in qualitative research methods and supervises students at all levels, from undergraduate to doctoral studies. She has developed several university courses for teachers on cognitive developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities, with a focus on learning, participation and development, as well as courses on health promotion in schools.

Shruti is currently course director for the following courses offered in Swedish:
