About Monica Reichenberg

Background: I obtained my PhD in subject didactics at the University 91̽»¨ in 2000 and was promoted to professor 10 years later. I have been a professor of literacy at UmeÃ¥ University and a visiting professor of educational science at Högskolan Väst.

Research interests: In my dissertation, I studied the reading comprehension of first- and second-language learners. I then continued to investigate, from a cognitive and sociocultural perspective, whether structured text discussions in small groups could be beneficial for students' reading comprehension. I have always fought for the right of all students to learn to read and understand what they read. Therefore, it was natural for me to also conduct structured text discussions in small groups with students in special needs elementary and high schools (now: adapted schools) and in daily activities. I have also been the scientific leader for Läslyftet (Reading Lift) in special needs elementary and high schools.

In recent years, I have been primarily interested in the variation in teachers' teaching of reading comprehension from a social cognitive perspective, and in how special education issues can be integrated with educational sociology. Here, I have conducted studies on the educational attitudes of newly arrived immigrants and the significance of the welfare state in special education issues. In other words, my research has been a lifelong learning process, and I am still active in research and am engaged as an opponent, expert, and reviewer.
