About Berndt Michael Schulz

Michael Schulz is professor in Peace and Development Research at the School of Global Studies at University 91Ě˝»¨.

Areas of interest

Democratization processes and resistance strategies among demo-advocators in civil society. Conflict managament, Conflict Resolution, Reconstruction, Reconciliation and Peace Building in war torn societies, New Regionalism in the Middle East (in particular focus on Israel, the Palestinian self-rule areas and Jordan), nation and state building processes, and ethno-religious politics in the Middle East.

Current reserach

Since 2011 he is part of a research program together, with Mikael Baaz, Mona Lilja and Stellan Vinthagen, financed by the Swedish Research Council. It concerns resistance strategies among demo-advocators in civil society called Globalization of Resistance: Influences on Democracy Advocators in Civil Society in the South. In addition, he also leads another Swedish Research Council project, together with Isabell Schierenbeck, called Mass mobilization as driving force of globalized Arab democratization. He is also completing a research project, financed by Sida/Sarec, called Hamas between Sharia rule and Demo-Islam, that deals with the Palestinian Authority and the Hamas movement’s governance strategies.

Teaching and tutoring

Lectures in different subjects at the School of Global Studies, such as single lectures at the PhD program in Peace and Development Research, the Master program in Global Studies, in particular the Conflict Resolution modules. Also, he lectures at the undergraduate level in Africa and Middle Eastern Studies, as well as in Development Studies and International relations. Supervises students at the BA, MA and PhD levels.
