My PhD project aims to study how to improve the circularity of land-based aquaculture systems by using different methods. I mainly focus on co-farming multiple organisms together, where the waste from a fed species, such as fish, is consumed by extractive species, such as algae. This increases the nutrient usage in the aquaculture system, thereby enhancing the ecological sustainability. In my research, I evaluate how co-farming affects the fish health and welfare, the nutrient content of the extractive species, and the nutrient balance in the system. I have also worked with introducing novel ingredients in aquafeeds, to replace less sustainable alternatives, and evaluating their effects on fish growth, health, and welfare.
My PhD is in the Blue Food Centre - for the future of seafood, which is a large national centre in Sweden with partners in both academia and the industry. You can read more about my project on the .
