About Kilian Spandler
I am an Associate Professor in Peace and Development Research and a Senior Lecturer in International Relations. After completing my PhD at the University of Tübingen in 2016, I taught at the Universities of Würzburg and Freiburg. From 2017 to 2024, I researched and taught at GU's School of Global Studies (SGS). In 2018, I held visiting research positions at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta, Indonesia, as well as The New School, New York City, United States. From 2024 to 2025, I worked first as a Professor ad interim at Kiel University and then as a Guest Professor at Freie Universität Berlin, before returning to SGS.
Research interests
- The role of populism in international cooperation;
- Humanitarian action and disaster relief;
- The role of national sovereignty for transboundary cooperation, especially in the Global South;
- International norms and the ethics of global governance.
I am a co-author of (Cambridge University Press, 2021), which analyzes the regional cooperation strategies of populist leaders around the world. In my first book, (Palgrave Macmilla, 2018), I investigated the historical evolution of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU).
Ongoing research
From 2025 to 2027, I am researching the impact of populism on Polish foreign policy. The project is funded by the Polish Academy for Academic Exchange (NAWA) and is conducted in cooperation with the Institute for Political Studies at the Polish Academy of 91̽»¨s in Warsaw.
Teaching
I teach and supervise at undergraduate and advanced levels, mainly in the subjects International Relations and Global Studies. I also supervise doctoral students in the EU Horizon Doctoral Network .
