About Karl-Göran Sjögren

Some of the central themes in my work have been the integration and development of computer-assisted methods and scientific analysis with the interpretation of archaeological data, with a focus on issues like social theory and prehistoric social organization.

In empirical terms, my work has focused on different aspects of the Stone Age in Sweden, particularly the Neolithic. A number or works relate to the remarkable concentration of megalithic tombs in the area of Falbygden, where a series of fieldworks have been carried out since the mid 1980’s, with the aim of elucidating the economic and social organization of the societies that were building these monuments.

On-going work on has taken two directions. First, to revaluate burial practices in Scandinavian megalithic tombs using detailed recording and spatial analysis of human bones in the chambers, and second, to investigate the social relations and mobility of humans and domestic animals through genetics and isotope analyses.

Selected research projects: Neolithic Lifeways (Sjögren et al 2019), Hidden landscapes (Davis et al in press), A Multi-species study of biological and social relatedness in Neolithic Sweden (started january 2025).
