About Jon Sunnerfjell

Background

Jon Sunnerfjell holds a PhD in Sociology. His dissertation, Un-learning to Labour? Activating the Unemployed in a Former Industrial Community (Arkiv förlag, 2023), ethnographically explored how a former industrial town sought to adapt unemployed individuals to the normative ideals encompassed by concepts such as employability and entrepreneurship. In addition to his dissertation, Jon has published social science research on coaching programs for the unemployed and the coding of disabilities at the Swedish Public Employment Service.

Research Interests

Jon’s research interests are rooted in working life, sociological organization theory, governance, and self-governance. He is currently involved in the research project Back to work: A study of post-retirement work in the senior staffing industry (Forte, 2024-00018).

Teaching

Jon has taught both theoretical and methodological courses in sociology and work science, in human resource programs, and within teacher education. He currently teaches in the work science program and in sociology courses, and supervises bachelor's and master's theses in sociology, work science, and human resource studies.
